Up, down, out

THE CAREER of Clive Lloyd, that tall belligerent left-handed batsman and brilliant fielder in the ring, stands up to the closest scrutiny. He was the first West Indian to make 100 Test appearances, ending his career having played 110 Tests for 7515 runs at the healthy average of 46.67, with 19 centuries.

Lloyd ascended to the throne for a tour of India in 1974–75, around the time Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson were putting England’s bats to the sword not so far away. He would then play in the England summer of 1975, leading the West Indies to a rousing victory in the inaugural World Cup one-day competition. In between those commitments he represented Lancashire in the 1975 County competition, where he teamed up with his namesake, David Lloyd.

Of course, the England Lloyd had just had the debilitating experience of facing Lillee and Thomson Down Under. Close to the end of the County season – and nearing the time when the West Indies would head off on a similar mission to Australia – their captain for the tour cornered his Lancashire teammate in the dressing room during a break in play.

David Lloyd: I remember Clive asking me about Thomson. He wanted a heads-up on the speedster with the javelin-throwing action. He said to me, ‘This Thommo fellow doesn’t look too special’. I couldn’t help thinking to myself, ‘You’ve got something coming, friend’. Then off they went … and Thommo hit Clive under the chin!
